That's right...you heard correctly! Knitting Diapers! Nuts, right? Not so much...
Recently, in my cloth diapering journey, I have been searching for patterns and ways to make my own cloth diaper covers; mainly to help out with the cost but also because I really enjoy making homemade items for my daughter.
I am not a seamstress, I am a knitter. So, in my quest to find covers that I could actually make myself without having to invest in sewing lessons and lots of help, I discovered wool diaper covers.
Wool is amazing! It can hold up to 40% of its weight in water before it will begin to feel damp. This makes for a great diaper cover, especially if you have a heavy wetter. There are several types of wool diapers. Soakers, which are put on like a pair of shorts, wraps, shorties, longies, which are like pants...it's all very confusing.
I do know that you have to use 100% wool in order to achieve the water holding capabilities. Acrylic yarns will repel, rather than hold the wetness. I dug around in my stash, I mostly have acrylics but I did find one ball of Araucania hand dyed natural wool that is absolutely gorgeous! I had more than enough to make a medium sized cover (which I actually think could be a large) from a free pattern I found on Raverly
You do have to be a member to view patterns but it is free to join and there are a lot of great projects to choose from.
The wrap cover I chose was easy to knit and I finished it in a couple of sittings over the span of 3 days. I have to lanolize it before the first use as it has been sitting for quite a while in my yarn bin. After that process, I'm going to try it out as a nighttime diaper for Aari. If it works well then I'll knit up some more!
Here is a pic of the finished diaper wrap:

Moss Stitch

I have been working on a scarf using moss stitch (k1, p1 cast on with an odd # of stitches) for no one in particular but it turns out we're going to an 80th birthday party this weekend so I'm going to use it as the gift. You can never have enough scarves on hand, I say! They make great gifts and everyone uses them. I doubled up on the yarn because I wanted it to be a bulkier weight. I'll post a final pic once it's finished. I'm still debating whether or not to add tassles. Hmmm...to tassle or not to tassle...
The hat is finished

I finished knitting Aari's hat. It is a little shorter than I would like it to be but I was running out of the leftover yarn so it is what it is! :) She still looks cute in it. I am going to thread some ribbon through the yo (yarn over) holes near the brim and add a flower or pretty bow. I'm thinking purple would go nicely with the yellow. And I'll be darned if I could get her to actually look at the camera while I was taking the shot! Oh well, at least the hat is visible :) Happy knitting, everyone!
A Hat for Aaralyn

I am currently knitting a hat for my daughter, Aaralyn. I created a pattern using a stitch pattern from one of my knitting books called "little shells." I had recently created a hat and cocoon sack for a friend who has a newborn and I had some leftover yarn that I wanted to use up. So, I decided to dabble in creating my own pattern! So far, so good! I will post the full pattern when I'm finished. I want to make sure it works out first.
